Job site safety briefing checklist for small contractor crews
A two-minute briefing at the start of the day keeps small crews safe and shows customers you run a careful business.
- Walk the site. Look for hazards: wet floors, open holes, live panels, ladders, pets and children.
- Check protective gear. Confirm everyone has the gear the job needs and that it is in good shape.
- Review tools and ladders. Inspect cords, guards and ladder footing before use.
- Protect the customer's home. Cover floors, mark work areas and keep walkways clear.
- Know the emergency plan. Everyone knows the address, the nearest first aid kit and who to call.
Common questions
Do I have to follow specific safety rules?
Requirements vary by trade, state and job. Check OSHA and your state rules, and verify with your attorney or insurer.
Should I keep a record of briefings?
A short dated note per job is easy to keep and useful if questions come up later.
