Job site measurement checklist for contractors

What to measure and note on the first visit so the quote is right the first time.

Measure once, quote right

  1. Confirm the scope with the customer. Repeat back what they want done.
  2. Measure every relevant dimension. Record length, width, height and clearances, and note units.
  3. Photograph the area and access path. Include the panel, meter, shutoffs or equipment label as relevant.
  4. Note obstacles. Stairs, tight spaces, pets, parking and anything that slows work.
  5. Write down existing conditions. Damage or issues the customer should acknowledge before work starts.
  6. Send a summary. Email the customer what you measured and noted.

Common questions

Do I need photos for every quote?

They are not required, but they prevent many disputes.

How accurate must measurements be?

Accurate enough for materials and labor. Add a note where you estimated.
