How to write a scope of work for a contractor job
Most disputes come from unclear scope. Spend ten minutes writing it down before work starts.
- Describe the work in plain words. Say what will be done, where, and with which materials.
- List exclusions. Name what is not included, such as permits, finishes or repairs found behind walls.
- State the schedule. Give a start window and a rough duration, and what could delay it.
- State the price and payment terms. Total, deposit, progress payments and due dates.
- Say how changes are handled. Point to your change order process.
Common questions
How detailed should it be?
Detailed enough that a stranger could tell if the job is finished.
Can the scope be part of the quote?
