How to write job notes the next tech can use

Good notes turn a repeat visit into a quick one. Poor notes mean another guessing game.

  1. Say what you found. Describe the problem and the condition of the equipment.
  2. Say what you did. List the work, the parts used and any settings changed.
  3. Say what is left. Note anything unfinished and why.
  4. Add photos. Take photos of labels, model numbers and the finished work.
  5. Write it before you leave. Notes written later lose detail.

Common questions

How long should notes be?

A few clear lines usually beat a long paragraph.

Who reads them?

The next tech, the office when answering questions, and you if a customer disputes something.
