Taking over a job another contractor started

Steps to protect yourself when you finish work someone else began.

Protect yourself on a takeover

  1. Document the current state. Photograph everything before you start, including anything that looks unfinished or wrong.
  2. Ask for paperwork. Request the original scope, permits and any approved changes.
  3. Write down what you will and will not cover. Be specific about existing work you are not responsible for.
  4. Check permits and inspections. Confirm with your local office what stage the job is at.
  5. Get approval in writing. Have the customer sign the new scope before you begin.

Common questions

Am I responsible for the earlier work?

That depends on your contract and local rules. Spell out what you inspected and what you did not, and ask your attorney.

Should I charge for the assessment?

Many do, since it takes time. State it up front.
