How to set up a simple referral thank-you

Referrals are the cheapest work a small contractor gets. A simple, consistent thank-you keeps them coming.

  1. Decide what you will give. Pick something modest and repeatable, such as a handwritten note or a small credit on a future visit. Write it down so you do not decide case by case.
  2. Ask at the right moment. Right after a job goes well and the customer says thanks is the natural time to say you welcome referrals.
  3. Make it easy to pass you on. Give a card or a short message they can forward with your name and number.
  4. Thank them twice. Once when the lead comes in and again when the job is booked, even if the referral does not turn into work.
  5. Keep a referral note. Record who referred whom on the customer record so you can thank the right person later.

Common questions

Should I advertise a referral reward?

Check local rules and your own margins first. A thank-you after the fact is simpler and avoids promising something you cannot deliver.
