How to run a weekly job costing check

Checking costs weekly catches overruns while you can still act.

  1. List open jobs. Pull every job still in progress with its quoted price.
  2. Add up costs so far. Labor hours, materials and any subcontractor bills.
  3. Compare to the quote. Note jobs where costs are running ahead of progress.
  4. Decide an action. Talk to the customer about a change order, or tighten the next stage.
  5. Write down the lesson. Feed it into your next quote.

Common questions

How often should I check?

Weekly for active jobs; monthly is too late to change the outcome.

What if my time records are messy?

Start with estimates and tighten as your records improve.
