How to give a ballpark when you cannot see the job
A range with clear conditions protects you and sets expectations.
Give a ballpark without getting stuck with it
- Ask three questions first. What is the problem, how old is the equipment, and can the customer send photos.
- Offer a range. Give a low and high figure and say what moves it.
- List what is not included. Permits, hidden damage, access problems and code upgrades.
- Say it is not a quote. Tell them a firm price comes after a visit.
- Follow up in writing. Send the range and conditions by text or email so nothing is misremembered.
Common questions
Should I give any number by phone?
Many contractors do, as a range, with conditions. Use your own judgment.
