How to prepare a first-week plan for a new technician
A new hire's first week sets the tone. A written outline beats improvising.
- Day one: introductions and basics. Meet the crew, review safety expectations, hand over keys, logins and the vehicle checklist.
- Ride along first. Pair the new person with an experienced tech for the first few jobs.
- Show how you talk to customers. Share your greeting, arrival message and end-of-job walkthrough.
- Explain paperwork. Walk through how jobs, photos, hours and notes are recorded and when.
- Check in at the end of the week. Ask what was unclear and note what to add to the plan.
Common questions
How long should a ride-along last?
There is no fixed rule. Many shops start with a few days and extend it until the new person is comfortable alone.
