How to organize paperwork for your tax preparer

Hand over clean records at tax time instead of a shoebox.

  1. Separate business and personal. Use a business account and card so records are not mixed.
  2. Collect income records. Gather invoices, deposits and any 1099 forms you received.
  3. Collect expense records. Keep receipts for parts, fuel, tools, insurance and subcontractors.
  4. Track vehicle use. Keep a mileage log if you claim vehicle costs.
  5. List assets bought. Note equipment and vehicles bought in the year with dates and prices.
  6. Send one organized package. Give your preparer a labeled folder and ask what else they need.
