Keeping customer information private as a contractor
Everyday habits that reduce the risk of customer details getting out.
Build privacy habits
- Collect only what you need. Name, address, phone and job details are usually enough.
- Lock your phone and laptop. Use a passcode and keep software up to date.
- Do not share logins. Give each person their own account and remove it when they leave.
- Be careful with photos. Avoid capturing documents, mail or faces unless needed for the job.
- Know your local rules. Privacy and payment-data rules vary, so check with your attorney.
Common questions
Is a spreadsheet safe enough?
It can be, with a strong password and limited sharing. Keep copies tidy and delete old ones.
What if a device is lost?
Change passwords right away and tell affected customers if required where you operate.
