How to handle a request to start work before the deposit arrives

Starting before the deposit usually means you are financing the job. Decide your rule ahead of time.

  1. Point to what was agreed. Remind the customer of the deposit amount and due date in the signed quote.
  2. Offer a quick way to pay. A payment link or card on the phone removes most delays.
  3. Hold the start date, not the relationship. Say you will keep their slot as soon as the deposit is received.
  4. Write down any exception. If you do agree to start early, put the new terms in a text or email.
  5. Keep ordering materials tied to the deposit. Do not buy special-order items until the deposit clears.

Common questions

Is it ever fine to start early?

That is your call for repeat customers you know well. Put the exception in writing.
