How to explain a price increase to repeat customers

Give notice, give a reason and make it easy to say yes.

  1. Give advance notice. Tell repeat customers before the change takes effect.
  2. Keep the reason short. Costs for materials, insurance and labor are easy to understand.
  3. Thank them for their business. Remind them what they get from working with you.
  4. Offer a fair transition. A date until which the old price holds can ease the change.
  5. Put it in writing. Send a short email or letter so there is a record.

Common questions

Should I announce increases to everyone?

Many contractors do, because surprises on an invoice cause more friction.

How much notice is enough?

Two to four weeks is a common courtesy, though your contracts may set rules.
