How to do a final walkthrough before asking for final payment

A short walkthrough ends jobs cleanly and avoids payment arguments.

  1. Finish your own check first. Go through your punch list before the customer arrives.
  2. Walk the job with the customer. Show what was done, how it works and what to expect over the next days.
  3. Write down anything they point out. Note each item and agree on who fixes it and by when.
  4. Take completion photos. Photograph the finished work and the cleaned-up area.
  5. Hand over paperwork. Give them warranty terms, care instructions and any documents the job requires.
  6. Send the final invoice. Send it the same day, with the walkthrough notes attached or summarized.

Common questions

What if the customer finds a small issue?

Agree on a short fix list and a date. Many contractors collect payment for the completed work and handle small items promptly, depending on the contract.

Should I walk through alone first?

Yes. A private check first means the customer sees finished work.
