How to decide which jobs to turn down

Say no politely when a job does not fit.

  1. Write down what a good job looks like. Type of work, area, size and minimum price.
  2. Check capacity honestly. Do not promise dates you cannot keep.
  3. Watch for warning signs. Unclear scope, no budget, rushed timeline or past payment problems.
  4. Decline kindly and quickly. Thank them and, if you can, suggest another contractor.
  5. Keep notes. Record why, so the next call is easier.

Common questions

Is it okay to refuse a job?

Generally you can choose your work, but check local rules and verify with your attorney.
