How to decide whether to take a job far outside your service area
A far job can cost more in drive time and missed local calls than it earns. Run the numbers before you say yes.
- Count total drive time. Include going, returning and every parts run.
- Price the lost local work. Estimate what you would normally earn in those hours.
- Add vehicle and fuel cost. Use your own mileage records.
- Consider the follow-up trips. Warranty visits and callbacks will be just as far away.
- Decide on a travel fee or a polite no. Either add a clear travel charge to the quote or refer the customer to a closer contractor.
Common questions
Is a travel fee normal?
Many contractors add one for work outside their usual area. State it plainly in the quote.
What if it is a big job?
A large job can justify the trip, but still include the callback cost in your math.
