How to ask for a deposit on a big job

A deposit covers materials and shows the customer is committed.

  1. Decide the amount before the quote. Many contractors use a percentage of the job or the cost of materials. Check your state's limits.
  2. Put it in the written quote. State the amount, what it covers and when the balance is due.
  3. Ask at signing, not later. Bring it up when the customer says yes, while they are ready.
  4. Take payment the same day. A card or bank payment link avoids chasing checks.
  5. Give a receipt. Record the deposit against the job so the final invoice is right.
