First visit checklist for contractors
What to confirm, photograph and explain at the first visit to a new customer.
Run a consistent first visit
- Confirm the contact details. Name, best phone number, email and who can approve work.
- Walk the problem with the customer. Ask them to show you what they noticed and when it started.
- Take photos before you touch anything. Wide shots and close-ups protect both sides.
- Explain the next step. Say whether you are quoting, diagnosing or starting work.
- Agree how you will follow up. Tell them when to expect the quote or call.
Common questions
How long should a first visit take?
It depends on the trade and the job. Aim to leave the customer clear on what happens next.
Should I give a price on the spot?
Only if you have seen enough. Otherwise explain when the written quote will arrive.
