First-time fix rate: how contractors reduce return trips

Return trips cost fuel, labor and goodwill. Tracking how often a job is finished on the first visit shows where to improve.

  1. Define the measure. Jobs completed on the first visit divided by all jobs in the period.
  2. Log the reason for every return trip. Missing part, wrong diagnosis, access problem, customer not home.
  3. Stock the truck from your own history. Carry the parts you actually use most, not a guess.
  4. Confirm access before you roll. Call or message ahead to confirm someone will be there.
  5. Review the numbers monthly. Pick the top one or two causes and fix those first.

Common questions

Is there a good target number?

It varies by trade and job mix. Compare yourself against your own past months first.

Does a return trip always mean a mistake?

No. Parts on order and customer-approved phases are normal. Track the avoidable ones.
