Cash flow forecast basics for contractors

A simple weekly look-ahead so a slow-paying job never surprises your bank balance.

Build a simple 8-week cash forecast

  1. List money expected in. Write each open invoice with the date you realistically expect payment, not the due date.
  2. List money going out. Payroll, materials, insurance, fuel, loan payments and tax set-asides, by the week they hit.
  3. Total each week. Subtract out from in. Mark any week that goes negative.
  4. Plan for the gap. Move a deposit request earlier, follow up on a late invoice, or time a big supply purchase after a payment lands.
  5. Update every Friday. Replace guesses with actuals and add one more week at the end.

Common questions

Do I need accounting software for this?

No. A spreadsheet with one row per week is enough to start.
