How contractors can collect payment before leaving the job

Money is easiest to collect while the customer is standing next to the finished work.

  1. Agree on payment terms up front. Put the amount, the deposit and when the balance is due on the quote.
  2. Finish with a walk-through. Show the work and ask if anything needs attention before you ask for payment.
  3. Hand over the invoice right away. Send or hand over a clear invoice the same visit.
  4. Offer more than one way to pay. Card, check and bank transfer each suit different customers.
  5. Record the payment on the job. Note what was paid and how, so the books stay clean.
